What order should you build your ute in?

You've got a new ute and a list. Bar, lift, tyres, canopy, drawers, fridge, rooftop tent, probably a winch. The question is what to buy first, and the honest answer is that the first two things cost almost nothing: find out exactly what vehicle you own, and find out what it weighs.

The rest follows one principle. Sort weight and legality first, then recovery and safety, then comfort. Build in that order and each purchase makes sense in the context of the last. Build in the order of what looks best in the driveway and you'll spend money twice, and probably spend a couple of years driving something that's over its GVM without knowing it.

Stage zero: know what you're driving

Before anything, get your series code and build date, and have your VIN somewhere you can find it. A model name is not enough to buy anything with. Our guide to series codes explains why a "Ranger" isn't one vehicle and how to find the identification plate.

Write the series, the build month and year, and the VIN on your phone. You'll quote them at every retailer from now on.

Stage one: know your numbers

This is the stage everyone skips, and skipping it is the most expensive decision in the build.

Off the identification plate and the owner's manual, collect: GVM, front and rear axle ratings, GCM if you'll ever tow, maximum tow ball mass, and the roof load rating, dynamic and static.

Then take the vehicle to a public weighbridge, as it sits, with a full tank and you in it. That ticket costs a few dollars and it's the only honest statement of what your ute weighs. Payload is GVM minus that number, not the figure in the brochure.

Now you have a budget in kilograms. Everything from here comes out of it: the bar, the winch, the tray or canopy, the drawers and what you put in them, the water, the fuel, the passengers, and — if you tow — the tow ball download. Write your remaining payload on the same note as your VIN. Update it as you go.

Stage two: be honest about what the vehicle is for

A ute that does school runs and two long weekends a year is a different build from one doing a six-month lap towing a van, and both differ from a work ute. Every stage below depends on which you've got.

The most common failure isn't buying the wrong brand — it's building a full expedition vehicle for a life that involves four nights of camping a year, then living with the ride, the fuel bill and the lost payload for the other 361.

Stage three: tyres, recovery points and the skills

Now you can spend money, and the first spend changes what the vehicle can do and how safely.

Tyres are the highest-value single purchase in any 4WD. They're the only thing touching the ground, and the load rating has to cover your axle ratings — which you now know, because you did stage one. Rated recovery points, and knowing which points the manufacturer actually permits, come next. This is where getting it wrong hurts people rather than wallets. A recovery course belongs here and it's the best value item on the list. So does a compressor, a gauge, a tyre plug kit and a way to air down — none glamorous, all used constantly.

Stage four: suspension, and anything that touches compliance

Suspension comes after you know the permanent weight you're asking it to carry. Springs are chosen for the load that's always on the vehicle, so fitting them before the bar and the canopy means specifying blind. If stage one showed you're short on payload, price a certified GVM upgrade before you buy springs. An upgrade is largely a suspension package plus certification, so buying springs first usually means buying springs twice. Ask about GCM at the same time, because raising one doesn't automatically raise the other.

Group everything that touches compliance here and plan it as one conversation with a certifier: lift height, tyre diameter, GVM, anything that changes the vehicle's rated masses. Rules vary between states, so talk to your road authority or a certifier before parts are ordered, not after they're fitted.

Stage five: protection

Bar, underbody protection, sliders. A bull bar is heavy, sits ahead of the front axle, and is the accessory most likely to need front springs with it — which is why it belongs near the suspension conversation, not a year later.

Two sequencing decisions matter. If a winch is ever possible, buy the winch-compatible bar now. And if a UHF is in your future, sort the aerial mount when you specify the bar. Our bull bars guide covers airbag compatibility, sensors and radar, and what "bar only" leaves out.

Stage six: storage, then power

Canopy or tray, then drawers, then the fridge and 12V system — in that order, because each constrains the next. A tray changes what canopy you can buy. A canopy determines where drawers and a battery can live. A drawer system determines whether a given cargo barrier still fits. Our canopies and drawers guides cover the traps.

Re-weigh at the end of this stage. It's where most builds quietly go over.

Stage seven: comms and range

UHF is cheap, useful and best fitted once you know where the aerial is going, which is why it sits after the bar. Our UHF guide covers why high gain is wrong in hilly country and which channels to leave alone.

Long range fuel and water come late deliberately. They're the purest form of payload spending — a hundred litres of water is a hundred kilograms — and you only know whether you can afford it once everything above is fitted and weighed. Stage eight: sleeping

Last, and deliberately last.

A rooftop tent is the classic wrong thing bought first. It's the most visible accessory on a touring build, so it gets bought early, and then the owner finds their dynamic roof rating was never going to cover the tent plus its platform — or that the payload it eats was the payload they needed for the tow ball. By stage eight you know your payload and your roof rating, so the decision takes ten minutes instead of becoming a regret.

A weighbridge ticket. Your VIN and series written down. Reading the owner's manual on recovery points, roof rating and towing. Packing heavy things low and forward. And a trip plan somebody knows about.
