Series codes explained: why a "Ranger" isn't one vehicle

You went looking for a part for your Ranger. Half the results say PX2, some say PX3, one says P703, and you have no idea which of those you're driving. That isn't the retailer being awkward — it's the market being precise. "Ranger" is a badge that has been bolted to several genuinely different vehicles over the last fifteen years. A bar built for one of them can have nothing in common with the bar for another.

Australian 4WD retailers state fitment by series code because that's the level of detail that actually means something. Know your series and your build date and you can cut a catalogue down in seconds. Don't know it, and you're guessing — which is how people end up with a bar that won't line up with their chassis rails and a restocking fee.

The badge is marketing, the series code is the vehicle

Manufacturers keep a model name for decades because the name is worth money. Underneath it they redesign the chassis, move the mounting points, change the guard profile, relocate the radiator support and switch the sensor loom. The name survives all of that. The series code is what changes when the vehicle does.

So the useful question is never "what fits a Hilux". It's "what fits an N80 Hilux built in March 2019".

The codes you'll see in Australian listings

Approximate eras only. Changeovers happen mid-model-year, Australian delivery often lags the global launch, and some of these ran alongside each other. Your build plate is the authority — this list is a translator, not a lookup table.

Model year is not build date, and neither is compliance date

This is the single most common way people get it wrong.

A vehicle has a build date (when it was manufactured), a compliance date (when it was approved for the Australian market) and a model year (a marketing designation). They can be months apart, and occasionally more than a year apart on imported stock that sat in a compound.

Retailers almost always publish fitment against build date. So "my 2015 Hilux" is not a usable answer — a Hilux built early in 2015 is an N70 and one built late in 2015 is an N80, and they share very little. The same trap sits in the Ranger line at the PX/PX2 changeover and again at the PX3 to Next Gen changeover.

How to find your series and build date

In rough order of reliability:

  1. The identification plate. Usually under the bonnet on the firewall or the slam panel, or on a label in the driver's door aperture. It carries the build date as a month and year, and often the model code.
  2. The VIN. Seventeen characters, on the same plate, usually also visible through the base of the windscreen and on your rego papers. Don't try to decode it yourself from a chart you found online — just quote it in full to the retailer. They can check it against manufacturer data, and it's the only identifier that's unambiguous.
  3. Your owner's manual and service book. Frequently list the model code on the first page.
  4. Your rego papers. Good for VIN and often build year, but usually won't give you the series code directly.

Write the series and the build month/year on your phone. You'll use them for every purchase you make for this vehicle.

Facelifts happen inside a series

A series isn't always internally consistent. Manufacturers run mid-life updates that change bumpers, grilles, lights and sensor positions without changing the series code. That's why you'll see listings that say something like "PX3 2018–2020" and others that say "PX3 2020 onwards" — same series, different front end.

Front-end parts are where this bites hardest: bull bars, bar-mounted driving light brackets, and anything that has to clear a radar or camera housing. Suspension and driveline parts are usually less affected, but "usually" isn't "always".

Shared platforms are not shared parts

Some of these vehicles are close relatives. Recent BT-50 and D-Max generations are built on shared underpinnings, and the current Amarok is closely related to the current Ranger. Buyers reasonably assume parts swap across.

Sometimes they do. Often they don't, because the panels, badging, grille apertures and bumper mouldings are exactly where the manufacturers chose to differentiate. Underbody protection might cross over while a bull bar absolutely won't.

Treat a shared platform as a reason to ask the retailer, never as a reason to assume. FITSPEC will show you a listing published for a related vehicle, but we'll show you whose claim it is — and a claim for a BT-50 is not a claim for your D-Max.

So will a PX2 part fit a PX3?

There's no general answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. It depends entirely on which part. Some carry across a changeover untouched. Others were redesigned precisely at that point.

The only answer worth acting on is the retailer's published fitment for your series and build date.
