Rooftop tents, swags and campers: the roof-rating maths
The question is always "will my roof take a rooftop tent". The answer is almost never about the tent, and almost never about the rack. It's about the number your vehicle's manufacturer publishes for how much the roof may carry while the vehicle is moving, and on a lot of wagons and utes that number is small enough that a tent and the rack under it use most or all of it.
So do this before you look at a single product. Find your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating — owner's manual, sometimes a label, otherwise your dealer. Subtract the weight of the rack or crossbars you'd need. Subtract anything else that lives up there permanently: an awning, recovery boards, a light bar, a shovel, the mounts for all of it. What's left is your tent budget. It is frequently a much smaller number than people expect, and it's the honest starting point for the whole decision.
Dynamic and static, and which one applies when
Two ratings, two situations. Our roof rack guide covers this in full; the short version, because it's the crux here:
Dynamic applies while the vehicle is moving. It accounts for braking, cornering and the vertical hammering of corrugations and potholes, all of which multiply the effective weight of anything on the roof. It's the smaller number, and it's the one your tent's own weight has to fit under.
Static applies when the vehicle is parked. Much larger, because none of those forces are present. This is why a tent you can legally drive around with can comfortably hold two adults asleep in it.
The mistake to avoid is reading the static figure, deciding your roof is stronger than you thought, and loading accordingly. The moment you drive off, dynamic applies again. And if your manufacturer doesn't publish a static figure — plenty don't — ask the dealer rather than inventing one. The rack manufacturer's static rating is not a statement about your roof.
What a rooftop tent weighs before anyone is in it
This is the part people underestimate, because a tent doesn't look like a heavy object until you try to lift one.
Rooftop tents weigh many tens of kilograms. Soft shell models commonly sit somewhere in the region of 50 to 70 kg, hard shells frequently more, and the big two-person hard shells with built-in mattresses and integrated racks more again. Treat those as indicative only. Get the shipped weight of the exact model you're considering, and check what's included in the figure, because the ladder, the mounting rails, the mattress, the cover and the annexe are all sometimes quoted separately.
Then add the rack. A full-length steel platform is a serious weight on its own, and it comes out of the same rating. This is where a lot of builds fall over: the platform someone bought because it was versatile has already consumed a third of the roof rating before the tent goes on.
The honest maths for most vehicles looks like: modest dynamic roof rating, minus rack, minus permanent gear, leaves a tent budget that a hard shell won't fit into. That's not a reason to be discouraged — it's a reason to know before you spend, and to consider the alternatives below.
Roof of the vehicle, or roof of the canopy?
If you drive a ute, this changes the arithmetic completely, and it's the most useful thing in this guide.
Mounting a tent over the tray or canopy means the governing rating is the canopy or tray's rating, not the vehicle's roof rating — a canopy on a chassis-mounted tray is a structure built to carry load, and a good one is generally rated far better than a passenger vehicle roof. It also puts the weight lower and further back than a cab roof would, and leaves the cab roof free.
The catches: ask the canopy manufacturer for its rating explicitly, dynamic and static, and remember a tub-mounted canopy is a different proposition from a tray-mounted one, because a tub is a pressed panel rather than a load-bearing structure. Our canopies and trays guide goes into that properly.
The point stands. A tent that doesn't fit on a wagon roof is often entirely reasonable on a tray-mounted canopy. Ask the question that way round.
What it does to the vehicle
Height. A platform plus a hard shell tent adds real height, and you will forget. Carparks, drive-throughs, service station canopies, boom gates and low branches all take their toll. Measure the loaded height and put it on a sticker inside the windscreen.
Handling. Weight that high raises the centre of gravity. The vehicle rolls more, feels less settled on corrugations, and is less forgiving on a side slope. It doesn't go away.
Fuel and noise. A tent is a brick in the airflow. Expect a real increase in consumption over a long trip, plus wind noise and, in a crosswind, a genuine sail effect.
Payload. Roof weight is payload like any other, out of the same budget as your drawers, water and towball download.
What it does to the trip
Rooftop tents are genuinely good. You're off the ground and away from water, ants and uneven rock, the mattress is usually better than anything you'd carry otherwise, and setup on a good day is a couple of minutes.
The trade-offs are practical rather than technical:
- You can't leave camp without packing up. Day trips from a base camp mean folding the tent away and putting it back up that evening, every time.
- Wet pack-down. Rolling a wet tent into its cover means unrolling it to dry at the next stop, or living with it.
- The ladder in the rain, at night, in bare feet. It's fine. It's just not nothing.
- You need reasonably level ground, and levelling a vehicle is harder than levelling a swag.
None of these are reasons not to buy one. They're the things worth knowing before you decide it's the obvious choice.
The honest comparison
A swag. Cheapest by a distance, lightest, packs in the tub, sets up in under a minute, and costs you no roof rating at all. You're on the ground, so ground conditions matter more, and in serious wet or in country with things you'd rather not share a floor with, it's less appealing. For a solo tourer or a couple who move camp every night, it's very hard to beat on value.
A ground tent. More room and better weather protection than a swag for similar weight and much less money than a rooftop tent. Slower to pitch, needs a decent ground surface, and a big one takes real packing space. The forgotten middle option, and often the sensible one.
A rooftop tent. Comfort and speed off the ground, at the cost of payload, roof rating, height, fuel and the ability to leave camp set up. Best suited to people who move often, camp in rough or wet country, and have the roof budget to spend.
A camper trailer or hybrid. Takes the weight off the vehicle entirely and puts it on its own axles, which solves the payload and roof rating problem outright, and gives you far more living space and storage. In exchange you're now towing: GCM, ball weight, reversing on a bush track, tracks that don't suit a trailer at all, and camp sites you can't get into. There's no winner here. The right answer depends on how often you move, how wet and rough the country is, how many people, and how much payload and roof rating you have. Work out the last one first, because it eliminates options for you.
Before you buy
- Find your vehicle's dynamic and static roof ratings from the manual or your dealer, before anything else.
- Subtract the rack's weight and everything permanently mounted, and work out your real tent budget.
- Get the shipped weight of the exact tent model, and confirm what's included in that figure.
- If you have a tray or canopy, ask its manufacturer for its rating instead — it's often the better mounting point.
- Confirm the retailer lists the rack and the vehicle-specific fitting kit for your series and build date, and quote your VIN.
- Check the tent's mounting rails suit your rack's slot or bar profile. They are not universal.
- Measure your loaded height and write it on a sticker inside the windscreen.
- Account for the whole lot in your payload budget, not just the roof rating.
- Re-torque the rack mounts after the first few hundred kilometres, and check them regularly.
- Set the tent up in the driveway once before the trip, in the dark, on purpose.
