Winches: sizing, first-layer pull and what they weigh
A winch is the most expensive thing most people bolt to the front of a 4WD, and it's sold on a single number that describes the least useful condition it will ever operate in.
Size it against GVM, not kerb weight
The common rule of thumb is a rated line pull of about 1.5 times the vehicle's weight. The part people get wrong is which weight.
Kerb weight is the empty vehicle. You do not get stuck empty. You get stuck loaded, with a bar, a canopy, drawers, water, fuel and gear — and quite possibly with a trailer behind you and suction from mud or sand that the multiplier is meant to absorb.
Size against your GVM, or better, against what your vehicle actually weighs loaded. If you don't know that number, the payload calculator will get you to it from your compliance plate.
Rounding up is cheap insurance here. A winch working near its limit gets hot, draws enormous current and slows down; one working well inside it does the job and stops.
The rated pull is the first layer only
This is the specification detail that catches almost everyone.
A winch's rated line pull applies to the first wrap of rope on the drum. As rope builds up in layers, the effective drum diameter grows, leverage works against the motor, and pull drops — commonly by a third or more by the outer layer.
A "12,000lb" winch with most of its rope still spooled is not pulling anything like 12,000lb.
Two practical consequences:
- Spool out. Pulling with the drum nearly full is the weakest configuration the winch has. Running the rope out to an anchor further away is not just about reach.
- Compare like with like. If one manufacturer quotes first-layer and another quotes an average, the numbers aren't comparable. Ask which layer the figure is for.
Synthetic or steel
Both are in use for good reasons.
Synthetic is dramatically lighter, floats, is easier to handle without gloves, and — the real argument — stores far less energy. When a loaded line fails, steel whips; synthetic mostly drops. It's also more vulnerable: UV degrades it, abrasion over a rock or a bar cuts it, and heat from a hot drum can damage the inner wraps.
Steel shrugs off abrasion, doesn't care about sunlight, and is cheaper. It rusts, it kinks, it will take your fingers off, and when it lets go under load it does so with all the energy you put into it.
Whichever you run, a damper over the line is not optional, and neither is inspecting the rope rather than assuming.
It has to have somewhere to live
A winch mounts to a winch-compatible bar — a bar with a cradle engineered for the load. It is not something a standard bar can be adapted to.

Check specifically that the bar is rated for the winch you're buying, not just "winch ready".
Electrics are half the job
A winch under load draws current on a scale nothing else on the vehicle approaches — hundreds of amps.
- The battery does the work, not the alternator. A tired cranking battery will sag badly under a long pull.
- Cable size and length matter. Undersized or corroded cable turns pulling power into heat.
- Duty cycle is short. Winches are intermittent-rated. Long continuous pulls overheat the motor and the solenoid pack, and heat is what kills them.
- Recovery draw is a good argument for the dual battery setup you may already be planning.
What it costs you in payload
A winch is roughly 30–45kg depending on capacity and rope, and the bar it needs is another 60–80kg. All of it sits forward of the front axle, which is the worst place to add mass — it loads the front axle disproportionately and takes weight off the rear.
That's easily 100kg of your payload before you've packed anything, and it's why the front axle rating, not just GVM, is worth checking. Nothing about a winch makes the arithmetic in what order to build your ute in less relevant.
A winch is not a recovery point
The winch mounts to the cradle. The cradle is engineered for a straight pull on the drum. Neither is a rated recovery point for a snatch strap, and a snatch load is a completely different, shock-loaded event.

What to give the retailer
Your vehicle and series, your loaded weight or GVM, which bar you have or intend to buy, and whether that bar is rated for the winch. Ask what layer the rated pull is quoted at, and ask in writing whether the bar is airbag compatible for your exact vehicle.
