Drawers and storage: weight, cargo barriers and fridge slides
A drawer system is the accessory that most improves day-to-day touring. No more unpacking the whole vehicle to find the tent pegs. It's also the accessory that most quietly consumes your payload, because it adds a significant permanent weight and then invites you to fill it with heavy things.
So the first question isn't which brand or how many drawers. It's how much weight you have left, and what a fit-out is going to cost you out of that budget.
The drawers themselves are heavy
An empty drawer system is not a light item. A steel twin-drawer unit sized for a wagon cargo area can weigh a substantial amount before you put anything in it — enough that it's worth treating as a serious line item in your weight budget rather than an afterthought. Timber and ply systems vary widely. Aluminium systems are generally the lightest of the practical options and generally the most expensive.
Two things to do rather than guess:
- Ask the retailer for the actual weight of the exact configuration you're quoting, including the top, wings, infill panels and any fridge slide. Base model weights rarely include the extras.
- Weigh your vehicle at a public weighbridge before and after the fit-out if you're anywhere near your limits. It's cheap and it removes the argument.
Remember that payload is GVM minus what the vehicle actually weighs now, and that everything shares that same budget — bar, winch, canopy, drawers, water, fuel, passengers and towball download. Our canopy guide walks through calculating it properly.
Then you fill them with the heaviest things you own
Drawers get loaded with tools, recovery gear, spares, tinned food and a compressor, because those are exactly the things that are annoying to dig for. That's the right use, but it's how a 60 kg empty system becomes 200 kg of loaded system.
Two consequences:
- It's permanent weight on the rear axle, so it's the load your rear spring choice needs to account for. This is the classic case for a constant-load rear spring rating rather than a comfort one.
- Check your rear axle rating, not just GVM. It's possible to be under GVM and still over the rear axle limit if everything heavy lives behind the rear seats. Axle ratings are on the vehicle's identification plate or in the manual.
Pack heavy items low and as far forward in the drawer as practical. A drawer full of tools at the very back of a wagon is the worst possible place for weight.
Cargo barriers are a safety item, not a trim item
This is the part of the guide to take seriously.
In a wagon, anything loose behind the rear seats becomes a projectile in a crash. Loose gear travelling forward into the cabin at speed causes serious and fatal injuries, and a full drawer system is a very large mass. A cargo barrier exists to stop that load reaching the occupants.
What matters:
- Buy a barrier made for your vehicle and fitted to the vehicle's designed mounting points. Barriers are made to an Australian standard for cargo barriers, and a barrier that's certified for one model fitted to another with improvised brackets is not doing the job it appears to be doing.
- Fitment is highly series-specific, because it depends on pillar shape, roof lining and the location of the mounting points. Confirm the retailer lists it for your series and build date.
- Half barriers versus full barriers. A half barrier behind the rear seats protects only when the seats are up. If you fold the seats to extend the load space, you want a full-height barrier.
- A barrier doesn't remove the need to restrain the load. Heavy items should still be secured. The barrier is the last line, not the plan.
On registration and roadworthy: a correctly fitted, vehicle-appropriate cargo barrier is a normal and accepted fitment. What can attract attention is a barrier that obstructs the driver's rear vision, is fitted with improvised mounts, or a fit-out that obscures required lights or seatbelt anchorages. Requirements vary by state and territory, so if your build is unusual — seats removed, a barrier repositioned, a fit-out that changes seating capacity — check with your state road authority rather than assuming. Removing seats in particular can have registration implications.
Also worth knowing: some drawer systems are designed to work with a specific barrier, and some barriers won't fit once a drawer system is in. Sort out the combination before buying either.
Fridge slides
A fridge slide makes a fridge usable rather than a thing you fight with. Some things to check before buying:
- Load rating. Slides are rated, and the rating needs to cover the fridge full, not empty. A full fridge is much heavier than the empty weight on the box.
- Locking, both ways. It must lock closed so it can't run forward under braking, and lock open so it can't run back at you on a slope. Check both.
- Tilt or drop-down. Useful for reaching the bottom of an upright fridge, particularly in a high canopy. Adds weight, cost and complexity — and a tilting slide puts the fridge's weight further out when extended, so check the rating applies in the tilted position.
- Extension length. A slide that only extends part way may not clear the lid of a top-opening fridge past the tailgate. Measure it against your actual vehicle opening.
- Height. Fridge on a slide, on top of drawers, in a wagon, can end up high enough that you can't see past it, can't lift the fridge out alone, and can't open the lid under the roof lining. Mock it up with a tape measure first.
- Restraint. The fridge must be strapped to the slide, and the slide bolted through structure, not just to a drawer top that isn't designed for it.
Fridges also need airflow around the compressor. A fridge boxed tightly into a canopy with no ventilation works harder, uses more power and can fail early.
Other storage worth considering
- Roller drawers versus fixed shelving. Drawers are convenient; open shelving is lighter and cheaper for gear you access less.
- Wings and infills fill the wasted space beside the drawers in a wagon, and are the cheapest usable volume you'll add.
- Under-tray and side toolboxes move weight low and outside the cabin, which is good for centre of gravity — but check they don't compromise departure angle or foul the exhaust or spare wheel.
- Water storage is heavy and should sit low and central. A litre is a kilogram, and it adds up faster than anything else you'll carry.
Before you buy
- Work out your remaining payload before choosing a system, and weigh the vehicle if you're close.
- Get the real weight of the exact configuration, extras included.
- Confirm the retailer lists the drawer system and any cargo barrier for your series, build date and body configuration.
- Check the barrier and the drawers are compatible with each other.
- Check your rear axle rating, not just GVM, if the load is all behind the rear seats.
- Confirm a fridge slide's rating covers your fridge when it's full, and that it locks both open and closed.
- Measure the vehicle opening and available height before committing to a slide or a tilt.
- Talk to your state road authority if your build changes seating, vision or lighting.
- Quote your VIN to the retailer and confirm fitment before ordering.
